Find a self-reinforcing cycle: the results of each output become fuel for the next input, and the system turns faster and faster.
Raymond’s interpretation (Wisdom)
The core of a flywheel is not the empty phrase “getting better over time,” but finding a self-reinforcing cycle in which the results of one’s output become fuel for the next input. The principle is the same in personal growth and business, but the application differs.
The personal-growth flywheel is: experience → review → capability → better experience. Why can someone with three years of work experience have ten times your problem-solving ability? Not because they are smarter, but because they have mastered effective review and continually turn experience into capability.
The business flywheel is: content → trust → product → revenue → more content. A company of one goes through three stages—the personal experimentation stage, brand stability stage, and team systems stage. The structure of the flywheel differs at each stage, but the self-reinforcing logic stays the same.
The key is that the flywheel must be “pushed” at the beginning; once it turns, it relies on momentum. Most people give up because they cannot get it moving in the early stage.
Strategy and method (Knowledge)
Capability compound-interest flywheel
Experience → review → capability → better experience: this is the self-reinforcing cycle of personal growth. The DIKW model transforms scattered data into personal wisdom; consistent review accelerates growth for individuals and teams.
Company-of-one flywheel
Content → trust → product → revenue → more content: this is the self-reinforcing cycle of a business model. The three-stage path is: focus on side work and cash flow in the experimentation stage; avoid over-expansion in the stable stage; and think about how to bring in the right people in the systems stage. Use digital tools and internet platforms to design products that can be sold repeatedly and establish standardized operations.
The key to starting the flywheel
At first, it must be “pushed”; after it turns, it relies on momentum. Do not try to do systems-stage work during the experimentation stage, and do not over-expand during the stable stage. Each stage has its own flywheel rhythm.
